Fly Casting and Fly Tying Instructions

Instructors will be available to teach you basic fly-casting and fly tying techniques. You may participate in either or both programs. All casting equipment and tying materials are provided. You may bring your own casting equipment, if you like. The instructors will help you set up your equipment should you need help. Come join us for some fun.

Water Sampling Like a Pro

We’ll use equipment the pros use to see how healthy the water is in the Little Miami River. Participants will learn about Greenacres Saturday Stream Snapshot Citizen Monitoring Program. Participants are welcome to bring a water sample from their own creek or we will provide samples of the Little Miami River. Participants will get a chance to help process their samples in our high-end lab using meters and other procedures the professionals use.

Kayak the Little Miami River

Kids 8+ will have the opportunity to paddle the Little Miami River beginning at the Izaak Walton League in Kayaks for a 2-mile expedition that will end at Lake Isabella. State Watercraft Officers will lead this expedition. Fifteen kayaks will be available.

Learn To Canoe
Saturday, Set Program Times: 11:00 am - 12:30 pm and 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Participants will learn all you need to know for a safe canoe trip including how to select the proper equipment, how to maneuver the canoe with different strokes, and what other supplies and equipment you need to take with you. An onshore class where participants learn the basics will be followed by a practice session in a pool area of the Little Miami River. Participants can get wet and muddy so plan accordingly. Restrooms are available to change afterward.

River Critters: Discover What Lives Below the Surface

Discover what critters lay below the surface of the LMR. We will be learning about Macro invertebrates- critters without backbones, which are large enough to be seen with the unaided eye. Using a net placed downstream, we will catch critters living on the rocks and in the sediments on the bottom of the River. Caught critters will be sorted, identified, and evaluated to determine the water quality of the river. Be prepared to get into the river and get feet wet. Shoes and/or boots are required to avoid injury. After we are done, the critters will be returned to the river.

Archery Anyone?

Ever wanted to try your hand at archery? Instructors will show you the proper way to load and shoot arrows at a stationary target. Instructors will provide youth and adult bows, arrows and targets. Each participant will get a chance to shoot 5 arrows from 50 feet at a target.

Catch A Fish in the Little Miami River

Come learn how to catch a fish in the Little Miami River with Izaak Walton League experienced guides. A short lesson on how to use a traditional type fishing rod and reel, choose and attach the lure to the line, and how to cast the lure will be held on shore. Participants will then hike down a flight of stairs to the Little Miami where guides will show you the best places in the river to catch a fish. Everyone will get a chance to fish. Participants can get wet and muddy so plan accordingly. Restrooms are available to change afterward.

Make a Fish Print

Come make a fish print and learn about the ancient practice called "Gyotaku" (fish rubbing). Fish printing originated in Japan or China in the early 1800's to preserve records of their fish catches. Participants will use rubber fish and ink to create their own fish print. Please bring along your own clean t-shirt, scarf or bag to print on (or use one of our scarves). Each participant can make one print.
