A Time Before Matches: Making Fire the Pioneer Way

Harnessing the power of fire was an essential skill for pioneers. Try your hand at fire building in the hearth of Abner Hollow Cabin. Use flint and steel and other primitive implements. Investigate natural fire making materials and delve into the role fire serves in the natural world.

Visit our colorful preschool room, where fun hands-on stations will captivate your 3 - 5 year old while you meet the staff and learn about our weekly preschool enrichment classes, our Saturday monthly preschool programs, and our parent/baby programs. For safety, no children older than 5 will be allowed in the preschool room. After you’ve enjoyed the preschool sampler, join up with the rest of your family to enjoy a hike along our beautiful trails or browse for unique gifts in our nature shop.

Coyote: Friend or Foe

Learn about recent research on urban coyotes and pick up some new facts about these wild canines. How common are coy-dogs? Are cats really a large part of their diet? Do they hunt in packs? Stop in the visitor center to pick up literature and discuss coyotes with Education Director Connie O’Connor. See a real coyote mount, tracks, skull, and pelt.

Nothing beats the thrill of looking into the eyes of a live hawk or owl. Life presents few opportunities to see these amazing birds up-close, but RAPTOR Inc. brings them to you live! Stop by anytime between 12 and 4 pm to enjoy learning about hawks, owls, and other birds of prey during the presentation from this local rehabilitation group. Learn how these birds were injured and why they are unable to be released to the wild. Discover what you can do to help protect birds of prey. Bring your camera!

Taste Ohio's Native Fruit -- the Pawpaw

Cake and cookie samples also available. Meet the “experts” (local growers) and explore educational exhibits. Learn the history of this pioneer crop and discover its modern day possibilities.
